Golden mile

Was the golden mile an alternate name for the Colin Smith mile? Do you recall the golden acorn award? Ross Haskell ott993 north house.

Golden Mile

Yes it was called the Colin Smith mile; I won it in 1968 and now have it (bought at auction). Malcolm Alison OTT742

Colin Smith Mile

Thank you Malcolm, i won it in 1969. I have a picture of myself winning taken by Colin Smith who was a good friend of my father. Mr Johnston was on the stopwatch. I have a small silver replica cup at home. I cannot remember the history linked to this event but i will do my best to investigate. Regards Ross Haskell OTT 993.

Colin Smith Mile

So what is the history of the Colin Smith Mile? - that's the first time I have heard of something at the school being named after someone - apart from "Tulk" - and are there any other named things we have all forgotton?

Golden Mile

Colin Smith died at Lynne Hill House during the period when West House was housed there awaiting the completion of the build of the new accommodation block. His father presented the Cup to be awarded to the boy who,in his 14th year, contributed most to the School's sporting achievements. Peter Millington and I, jointly, were the first two holders of the cup. Some time later the Cup was awarded for a purely athletic achievement. Colin was a keen athlete, his speciality being the 220yards. Since the Golden Acorn was also mentioned under this heading, dare I admit that I was the first boy to be awarded a Golden Acorn. Oett crafted it in his workshop out of a piece of brass. I can remember well the loving polish it received each morning!! Dennis Williams (OT 115)
