Major General Ian Baxter - OT 183 - North

We have been informed by some Old Boys that an obituary appeared in the 22 November edition of The Daily Telegraph announcing the death of Major General Ian Baxter who has died aged 80. He played a key role with the Commando Forces Royal Marines during the Falklands Campaign. Ian was part of the large intake to Ottershaw in January 1951 when the new West House building was almost ready for occupation and hence the school expansion. I was part of that same intake. Bert as he was more commonly known as at that time was a member of North house and I suspect excelled more at sport than academically. I note that he joined the army through National service whereas many of his piers entered the army at that time through Sandhurst. Regardless of this he seems to have excelled in his career by making the rank of Major-General and I am sure his Ottershaw grounding helped him in this achievement. An obituary appeared in The Times.
