Nigel Rowberry

OTT 476 - Tulk

We were informed on 3/3/2022 of the death of Nigel Rowberry.
His friend Michael Edginton (OTT 499 - Tulk) provided the details

I was just looking at the "known deaths" and see that my old school friend Nigel is not amongst them...
OTT476 admission on 9.9.74 (Tulk), so would, presumably, come directly after another pal, Peter Robinson OTT474. Nigel was a Welsh Guardsman and died (aged 20) on HMS Galahad at Bluff Cove in the Falklands War on 8.6.82.
For interest, please find attached a screenshot of a military commemorative.

The Falklands War took place in 1982.  Support Ships HMS Sir Gallahad and Tristram were sent there from Britain.
The Sir Gallahad was transporting a battalion of Welsh Guards, among whom was Nigel Rowberry who had been a pupil at Ottershaw School (OTT 476, Tulk) from 9/9/74 to 10/7/78.

While both ships were anchored off the Falkland Islands, awaiting disembarkation on 8th June 1982, both were hit by bombs dropped from Argentinian jets.  On the Sir Galahad, 48 men were killed of which 32 were Welsh Guards.  Among the dead was Nigel.  He was 21.

At the school, he was preceded by his brother Mark (OTT 436, Tulk) who was at the school from 7/1/76 to 18/12/76.
There is no record of either brother joining OSOBS.

OSOBS President at the time wrote to Nigel’s widow, who lived in Wales, on behalf of the Society.
