Malcolm Culmer (c.1960) in the old Chapel - © Mike Leggett (OT493) <br>Malcolm was a House peer who spent large amounts of time avoiding staff, who might otherwise give him a ticking off for wearing what were known then as drainpipe trousers. His risk taking extended to posing in the wreckage of the part demolished Chapel that had stood derelict for years opposite the front doors to the main building.

These traps were old glass food jars buried in the earth with the opening level with the soil. We kept the animal in a cage and fed it until it was old enough to survive. In later years, Mike and I would get up in the small hours and creep out of the school into the grounds. Climbing a tree in the woods, we would wait for the badgers to emerge from the sette beneath, with camera at the ready. The problem was that it was too dark to see anything clearly. We also tended to chatter which given the shyness of badgers was probably why we never managed to get a picture of anything except the entrance to the sette, sans badger.

Both from West Ham from where the headmaster frequently recruited a proportion of each year’s intake. Terry was a mentor appointed to introduce me as a new boy in 1956. He and Raymond, fashion conscious, sported the Windsor knot in their ties and had their trousers turnips trimmed to the minimum 15 inches allowed by the school rules. Most of my year came from middle class families from Surrey. My family was in various postings in the north, midlands and Scotland.
