Born 12th December 1939 in Stanley, County Durham, David was particularly proud of his grandfather who was a coalminer. After the family moved south to Kingston on Thames, David was chosen for Ottershaw School in 1952. His school life was distinctive for his sporting achievements where he immediately won places in soccer, rugby and cricket teams for his years and represented the school in athletics as sprinter. His natural talents as a sportsman and athlete immediately won him the admiration of his schoolmates, who equally enjoyed his enthusiasm and good natured optimism. In his last year he was particularly successful as a fast bowler in the cricket first XI and a goal scoring forward in the soccer first XI.

On leaving school, David joined the Westminster Bank as a trainee in the Kingston branch, commencing what was to be a lifetime career in banking, ultimately retiring in 1989 as a branch manager. With the bank he continued his sporting activities representing the bank in both soccer and cricket. In his leisure time David took up golf where he represented both Foxhills and Chobham Golf Clubs playing off a handicap of 12. He always said he was “serious” about his golf!  He was active on the Old Boys’ Society Committee as Treasurer for a number of years, under Ian Hislop as President.

After an 18 month battle against cancer, David died on 26th July 2009. He leaves a widow, Rita, his wife for 44 years.
To have known David was a privilege and pleasure. We shall miss him greatly.
